It's day 2 of "Fight to be Fit!" Last Sunday we explored five areas of spiritual fitness. Each day this week we are targeting an area and providing ideas and resources to jump start your growth.
Physical fitness is always tied to intake (diet). If we want to get in better shape, we need to eat more good stuff and less bad stuff.
The same is true in the spiritual realm. Your spiritual health is directly tied to your spiritual diet. Yesterday we looked at eating the right stuff. Today, we'll focus on cutting out the junk food.
Spiritual junk food takes on a variety of forms. We tend to zero in on technology issues--the movies we watch, the TV shows we take in, and our internet viewing habits. The tech advances of recent decades have opened new, dangerous pathways that are detrimental to our vitality. We reason that we are adults, that we can handle it.
The Bible is clear, this is not an adult issue, it is a moral one.
Solomon makes it clear with the questions in Proverbs 6:27-28
27 Can a man scoop a flame into his lap
and not have his clothes catch on fire?
28 Can he walk on hot coals
and not blister his feet?
28 Can he walk on hot coals
and not blister his feet?
The assumes answer is clearly, "NO!"
Far before technology, other junk food ate at our souls, including:
Gossip and slander
Impure thinking and speech
Negativity and pessimism
Bitterness and resentment
Paul says in Philippians 4:8-9
And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. 9 Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me-everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.
Where are your thoughts fixed? Your spiritual health is directly linked to your intake, whether good or bad.
Today, do some resistance training. Say no to ungodly thoughts and actions.
Titus 2:11
For the grace of God...teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age...
