My friend Mary wrote a blog post recently about her first official winter in Wisconsin.
She described the formation of ice on the lake.
I read the article. 325 words.
280 characters would not have been enough to convey the experience.
An Instagram photo could not say it all.
She needed words. Not tons of them, but more than the standard Facebook post.
I read it and thought about the short but wonderful season when blogs were in. I was a posting maniac. Writing felt right. And it was a blast to chart stats and view maps of who was reading around the world (literally). It also enjoyed following other bloggers, commenting and connecting.
What happened?
Facebook happened.
Twitter happened.
Short but sweet (and not so sweet) became the new gold standard.
I kept my blog, mostly as an archive and for a very occasional post.
As I finished reading Mary's post, I wondered where I should comment. Should I go back to Facebook where everyone was commenting, or should I post on the blog, knowing no one may read what I wrote?
I chose the blog. Felt a little retro, like the love of vinyl in the age of downloads.
It made me want to blog again, but differently.
What if I write just to write? No social media links. No broadcasting. Just putting words out there.
Who knows, maybe, just maybe someone will stumble into this old record store, pick up an LP and think, "I remember these."
